Karate Australia Appoints Elizabeth Mahler as National Program Director, Guardian Girls Karate Australia

Published Mon 20 Oct 2025

Karate Australia is proud to announce the appointment of Elizabeth Mahler as National Program Director, Guardian Girls Karate Australia, a national role overseeing the growth and delivery of this important social impact initiative.

Launched earlier this year in partnership with the World Karate Federation (WKF), Guardian Girls Karate (GGK) empowers women and girls through self-defence, confidence, and community. The programme, created by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Koyamada International Foundation (KIF), and the WKF, is being rolled out across Australia following its successful debut at Griffith University in Queensland.

Mahler, a leading instructor and respected figure in Australian karate, played a key role in developing the GGK syllabus and was one of the first 17 instructors certified in Oceania. In her new role, she will oversee quality assurance of training, lead curriculum development, certify instructors, and act as the national spokesperson for the programme.

“Guardian Girls Karate represents the very best of what karate stands for - strength, respect, and community,” said Mahler. “This programme gives women and girls the tools to protect themselves, but it also builds confidence, resilience, and connection. I am honoured to lead its development in Australia and help it reach communities that need it most.”

Alan Key, Managing Director of Karate Australia, said Mahler’s appointment is an important step in building a strong and sustainable programme. “Liz has been instrumental in developing Guardian Girls Karate from the ground up in Australia. Her leadership and technical expertise will ensure the programme maintains high standards while continuing to expand its reach across the country.”

Hani Zahra, President of Karate Australia, added, “Guardian Girls Karate is more than a sport initiative - it’s about empowering women and creating safer communities. With Liz leading the programme, we know it will continue to make a lasting impact across Australia.”

Guardian Girls Karate Australia will continue to expand through partnerships with universities, local councils, and community organisations, providing pathways for women and girls to build confidence, safety, and inclusion through karate.
