Appointment of Alan Key as Managing Director - Karate Australia

Published Mon 02 Jun 2025

Karate Australia is pleased to announce the appointment of Alan Key as its new Managing Director, effective immediately. Alan steps into the role as Ian Basckin transitions into a new position as Chief Operating Officer, focusing on operational delivery, local and national events, and ongoing support across key national initiatives and key governing bodies that support Karate Australia.

Ian has been instrumental in guiding Karate Australia through a period of change and growth. His leadership has helped strengthen club relationships, improve governance, and lay the groundwork for a more unified and forward-looking organisation. His ongoing involvement ensures valuable continuity and ongoing support for both staff and members.

As Karate Australia continues to expand its reach and grow membership, additional resourcing was needed, particularly with expertise across business development, marketing, sales, and commercial operations. Alan’s background makes him ideally suited to lead the next phase of development.

Alan brings a powerful combination of business acumen and a lifelong connection to karate. He is currently Vice Chairman of NCS Australia - a Singtel company, and previously founded and managed Dialog Information Technology, which became the country’s largest privately-owned IT software services firm. He also serves on the board of Karate Australia and is a Karate Queensland Executive Committee member.

“I’m honoured to step into this role at such an important moment for the sport,” said Alan Key. “Karate has long played a meaningful role in my life. I look forward to continuing to work with Ian, the Board, clubs, members, and partners to strengthen our foundations and help karate thrive across all levels in Australia.”

The Board of Karate Australia extends its sincere thanks to Ian Basckin for his continued leadership and commitment, and warmly welcomes Alan into the Managing Director role.
