2026 Assistant National Coach (Veterans) Expression of Interest

Karate Australia (KA) invites applications for the newly established Assistant National Coach (Veterans - Kata & Kumite) position, supporting athletes aged 35 years and over across Kata and Kumite at national and international level.

This role reflects KA’s commitment to strengthening the athlete pathway, recognising the growth of veterans competition globally, and ensuring Australian athletes receive high‑quality coaching, preparation, and support.

Role Purpose

The Assistant National Coach (Veterans - Kata & Kumite) will lead and support the development, preparation, and performance of Australia’s veterans athletes, ensuring alignment with KA’s Strategic and Play Well Plans, and the objectives of the National Coaches Commission (NCC).

Key Responsibilities

The Assistant National Coach (Veterans - Kata & Kumite) will:

  • Assist in the delivery of the national veterans program in alignment with NCC objectives.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance support to veterans athletes at national squad activities and selected international events.
  • Contribute to the planning, development, and execution of veterans training programs.
  • Uphold KA values of Excellence, Ethics, and Equity and maintain positive working relationships with athletes, coaches, NCC, and the KA Board.
  • Attend all relevant meetings, training sessions, and events as required.
  • Provide input into selection processes when invited by the NCC or Athlete Selection Committee.

Selection Criteria

Applicants must meet the General Selection Criteria outlined in the KA National Team Coach Selection Policy, including:

  • KA KIA Silver accreditation
  • Current Senior First Aid
  • Valid WWC
  • Minimum four years coaching experience at state or national level
  • Demonstrated coaching aptitude and understanding of WKF rules
  • Strong team orientation and alignment with KA values

In addition, applicants should demonstrate:

  • Experience coaching mature‑age athletes or athletes returning to high‑performance environments.
  • Understanding of the physical, technical, and psychological considerations relevant to veterans competition.
  • Ability to design and deliver effective training sessions tailored to veterans athletes.
  • Strong communication and mentoring skills.

Term of Appointment

The Assistant National Coach (Veterans - Kata & Kumite) position will be appointed for a two (2) year term, with the KA Board retaining discretion for a two‑year extension subject to review.

Following the application period, the Selection Committee (as defined in the KA National Team Coach Selection Policy) will review applications, conduct interviews where required, and make recommendations to the KA Board.
